The Sundress

Fingers touch, step, step.

Toe. Oh, the toe, up.

Spin, spin, spin – opening, opening.

Open, and down, face to the universe.

Hot sun, forever laughing, a giggle drawn.

A breath, center, focus.

Step.

“You’ve gotten better.”

Stop. A blush. “I don’t plan to be good.”

“Just dance?”

“Yeah. Been watching long?”

Forever. “Nah, maybe for eighteen pirouettes.”

“I’m not getting high on my toe.”

“Hold your back straighter.”

“Okay. Again?”

“Please.” Spring pea eyes reflect the flowers,

The sky, the child.

Fingers touch, step, step.

Toe. Oh, the toe, up.

Spin, spin, spin – opening, opening.

Open, and down, face to the universe.

Hot sun, forever laughing, a giggle drawn.

“I always giggle when I land.”

“That’ll keep you off stage.”

“I only want to be on your stage.”

“Then the giggle is fine – more than fine.”

A blush.

White like heavy cream, yellow, red and blue flower print,

Multi green stems and leaves, spaghetti straps,

Empire waist, hem dancing at the knee,

Floating with each graceful turn,

Mimicking flows of oaken hair waving to the sun.

Coy smile. “Where’d you get the dress?” I know.

You know. “From your drawer.”

Toe, arms spread like a postcard vista, into a bow.

“I didn’t think you’d mind.”

“You’re beautiful.”

“I see that in your eyes.”

“Dance for me again?”

“For a lifetime, and more.”

Fingers touch, step, step, giggle.
